FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know before your Kilimanjaro adventure with Yamakara Aron.
1. Gear & Equipment
What kind of hiking boots should I bring?
High-cut, 3-season hiking boots are required. You will start wearing them from the very first gate. Please make sure they are broken in before your trip.
Do I need crampons?
12-point crampons are generally NOT required. If local conditions change and they become necessary, we will notify you in advance — and they are available for rental on-site. Chain spikes are listed as essential equipment.
Will my thermos fit in the pocket of the rental down jacket?
Yes! Our rental extreme-cold down jackets have large pockets that can fit a 500–700ml water bottle or thermos.
I'm worried about lost baggage. What should I do?
We recommend packing your hiking boots, rain gear, and Day 1 clothing in your carry-on luggage. If your checked baggage is delayed, Yamakara Aron Expedition's local office in Marangu can provide essential gear to get you on the mountain.
I heard plastic bags are banned in Tanzania. Is that true?
Yes, but only single-use plastic shopping bags are prohibited. Nylon stuff sacks, snack packaging, hand warmers, and similar items are perfectly fine to bring.
2. Life on the Mountain
How do I get drinking water on the mountain?
Our staff provides drinking water (or warm beverages) at rest stops and camps. Please bring a 2-liter container (water bottle or hydration bladder) to refill throughout the day.
Are there showers on the mountain?
Mountain huts do not have showers. We recommend bringing large wet wipes. However, our staff provides warm water in a basin every morning and evening for washing your face and body — a small Japanese touch that our climbers love.
Can I charge my devices on the mountain?
No charging is available during the climb. Please bring a fully charged power bank. ⚠️ Power banks must be in your carry-on luggage — they cannot go in checked baggage.
Do I need altitude sickness medication (Diamox)?
It is not mandatory, but over 90% of our past participants have taken it. Diamox requires a prescription, so please consult your doctor or a travel medicine clinic before departure. Our staff will advise on dosage timing during the tour.
Is Wi-Fi available in the mountain huts?
Wi-Fi is available at hotels in town, but mountain hut Wi-Fi is extremely unreliable and may require a local SIM card. We recommend assuming you will be offline during the climb — and enjoying the disconnect!
3. Costs, Payments & Logistics
How much USD cash should I bring?
We recommend bringing $200–400 USD in cash. This covers drinks, souvenirs, emergency expenses, and other incidentals. Crew tips ($250–300 per climber) should be prepared separately.
Can I use a credit card in Tanzania?
Yes — at airports, supermarkets, souvenir shops, and hotels. Please bring a VISA or Mastercard with a 4-digit PIN. ⚠️ JCB cards are not widely accepted.
What travel insurance do I need?
We strongly recommend travel insurance that covers illness/medical evacuation. Kilimanjaro climbing does NOT require a "hazardous activity" rider — standard travel insurance is sufficient. Please verify your coverage before departure. Note: if you do not receive a doctor's written diagnosis, insurance claims may not be accepted.
What should I wear for the safari?
Safaris are hot! A t-shirt and sandals are fine. However, sun protection is essential — please bring a hat and sunscreen.
🏔️ 94.6% summit success rate — 123 out of 130 climbers reached the summit between 2022 and 2026. This is nearly double the industry average of 65%.
